It wasn't too
long ago here on Guam when the power would go off at
the drop of a hat. Although less frequent, it does still
happen. During that crazy time, we noticed people bringing
in all kinds of equipment in need of repair (including
backup power supplies). We also immediately noticed
sales skyrocketed on backup power supplies. Let's jump
on the bandwagon, right. Well not exactly, we were already
on the wagon when the band got here. Anyway, no need
to tell the most intelligent customer base in the world
how important it is to have an uninterruptible power
supply, you already know.
DC Power Systems
We all ready know what backup power is; however, do
we know the different types? The most basic power system
is probably a battery. It is logical that the backup
power system for a battery would be another battery
(good enough for me). In reality, that's super basic,
but there's a little bit more to it.
Newmar
Chargers are the backbone of the DC backup system,
not to mention the second battery. Newmar is a company
that specializes in DC power and mostly battery charging
systems. SolCom offers a variety of Newmar products,
including the Newmar line of battery chargers. These
chargers can maintain your battery for months to years
for trouble free operation.
Integrated Power System
(IPS)
If the need is more complex than a simple charger
and battery can provide, Newmar manufactures a line
of Integrated Power Systems that allow total control
over your DC backup power system.
DC/AC Systems
Next in line from the DC system is the combined DC/AC
System Such systems can provide a DC source and charging
from an AC source and visa-versa.
TrippLite
TrippLite manufactures a complete line of low/moderate
power inverters and chargers combination units.
Charger/Inverter
The TrippLite charger/inverter model line will allow
you to keep a lead acid battery charged and will provide
instant AC power derived from the battery via an inverter
incorporated in the charger package.
Inverters
TrippLite inverters are a good choice when temporary
AC power is required of your battery or solar power
system.
Trace
Trace also makes an excellent product line of inverters
and chargers. Trace generally caters to the recreational
type of application for the inverter with models in
>1KW range.
Charger/Inverter
The Trace charger/inverter model line will allow you
to keep a lead acid battery charged and will provide
instant AC power derived from the battery via an inverter
incorporated in the charger package. These models
are ideal when AC power is required of a solar power
system. Generator or mains power, when available,
can help charge the batteries.
Inverters
Trace manufactures models especially suited for higher
energy needs, >1kW range.
AC Systems
The most popular backup power supplies by far are
for AC systems. That is, a power supply that will
provide AC power when the primary source fails within
a few milliseconds. The accepted term for this kind
of power supply is an uninterruptible power supply
or UPS for short. In reality, most UPS units aren't
truly a UPS in the purest definition. This is because
most UPS units actually switch from mains power (when
it fails) to an inverter running on battery power.
This transition usually takes a couple of milliseconds
to occur, not a problem for 99.9% of most electronics/computers
available to the consumer. By definition a true UPS
would be a power supply/charger constantly applying
power to a battery and inverter that in turn is providing
AC power to the load. This type of system is considered
a true UPS; however, this system is normally more
expensive.
American
Power Conversion (APC)
SolCom provides sales and service for the APC product
line. The APC product is a standby
type of UPS.
Backups & Backups
Office
Backups and Backups Office provides standby backup
power for computers and other small electronic equipment.
Backup
Pro/S
The Backup Pro series of APC product provides standby
backup power and smart-trim and smart-boost line conditioning
for computers and small electronic equipment.
Smart Ups
The
Smart Ups backup power supply provides standby backup
power, smart trim and smart boost line conditioning,
and is plug-n-play compatible with computers running
MS-Windows 95/98. Software is available for other
operating systems.
Matrix
The APC Matrix is a middle line standby backup power
system capable of handing 3000 or 5000 VA load. The
Matrix is capable of extended run time with the addition
of battery modules. Matrix is compatible with MS-Windows
95/98/NT and UNIX.
Symmetra
Symmetra is a scaleable power array capable of up
to 8 or 16 kVA loads. Symmetra has a 4-kVA redundancy
built into its design. The Symmetra is recommended
for must have power situations such as computer/data
processing centers, etc.
Other APC products
SolCom supports the whole APC product line, which
also includes SurgeArrest, network protection, etc.
