Solar Power Microwave System complete and on-line in Palau

Recent Solar Power Village Project

Solar power has the potential of being an inexhaustible power source. Technology is still in its infancy with solar power, but the future looks to be very promising for this technology. SolCom is helping to bring this on the edge power technology to you through consulting, sales, installation, upgrades, and service. SolCom offers equipment recognized throughout the industry as state-of-the-art and reliable.

Solar Panels
With the exception of the sun itself, the solar panel is considered the source of power for the solar powered system. The solar panel is a battery of sorts that is comprised of a series of photovoltaic cells. This arrangement produces an electric current when exposed to light. Solar panels are manufactured in various sizes, shapes, and with various material and techniques. The range of applications is as varied as the type of cells that are around. Miniature panels or cells are used to run calculators and larger and much more expensive panel or arrays are used to keep the batteries charged on communications satellites.

BP Solar
SolCom provides the islands with the BP Solar line of solar panel products.

Mega-modules
The primary BP Solar product that SolCom markets is the BP Solar Mega-module. These modules vary in size and output from about 5 watts to about 120 watts. The construction is rugged and modules carry warranties from 10 to 20 years.

Controllers
The controller of a solar power system can be considered the brain of the system. In most cases, the controller acts primarily as a charge regulator that interfaces the solar panel(s) to the battery. This arrangement protects the batteries from an overcharge condition as well as keeping the batteries from discharging through the solar panels when not illuminated. Some controllers are more sophisticated and can protect batteries from deep discharge, equalize batteries, and may offer some form of load control, etc.

Morning Star
Morning Star, Corp. offers excellent controllers suited for the marine environment.

Pulse Energy (formerly APT)
Pulse Energy makes controllers suited for both larger installations and multi-array 48-volt communications systems.

SCI
SCI has been a mainstay in the solar power business. SCI has several stand-alone control modules. A more elaborate solar system can be assembled in building block fashion using the SCI's products.

Batteries
A true solar powered system would not truly be a system without batteries. The battery is the storage tank of the system. Batteries provide power for periods of darkness such as at night and during cloudy days. Batteries are available in various form and all are lead acid in construction. Batteries can be in a maintenance free spill proof package or of the wet cell variety.

Johnson - Dynasty
Johnson's Dynasty battery is a very reliable battery SolCom sells. The Dynasty is of the maintenance free spill proof design and is ideal for shipment to our outer island customers.

Trojan
Trojan, being a deep cycle wet cell type of battery is excellent for use in solar systems. SolCom recommends the L16 model for moderate to large systems. The T105 is also a good choice for small to moderate use.

Inverters
While not recommend for use with most solar power systems, an inverter can be used when AC power is required. The inverter converts the lower voltage, high current to DC to high voltage, low current AC. Ten to twenty percent of the power can be lost during this conversion, for that reason it is not normally recommended to use inverters for your day to day power needs. There can be cases when this is not possible and that is okay, however the solar power system must be sized to consider this loss.

Trace
Trace makes an excellent line of inverters. Trace generally caters to the recreational type of application for the inverter with models in >1KW range. Models include DC to AC inverters and DC to AC inverter with AC to DC charge when not inverting.

TrippLite
TrippLite also makes a line of inverters and inverter chargers. These products are limited at about the 500-watt limit.

Appliances
Q: If I'm not supposed to run an inverter, what good is solar power?
A: It is true. Everything made now a day seems to be captive to that little hole in the wall. In fact, several products are available that will run directly on low voltage DC. Products like blenders, TV's, VCR's, lights, fans, etc. SolCom carries some of these items and can source just about any thing you would like.

Sunfrost
For keeping your sodas cool or even your ice cream frozen, SolCom supports the Sunfrost line of refrigeration.

ThinLite
So you may be able to find the Sunfrost tonight you may want to install on or two ThinLite low voltage lamps. These light fixtures use off the shelf lamp tubes.

Sola
Sola manufactures a complete solar powered street lamp package. This may not exactly be an appliance but we thought you might like to know about this baby. You can tell your Power Company, mayor, and governor, that this cost about the same as a standard street light to install and uses no-GPA power, ever. Some one told me the government wants to cut costs!

Installation
You can hook up your system yourself, however we are willing to bet that you would rather let the pro's do it for you. SolCom is a licensed electrical contractor and employees trained technicians to provide you with a trouble free installation.

Residential
SolCom provides installation in residences.

Commercial
SolCom provides installation for commercial applications.

Institutional
SolCom provides installation for various institutional uses.

Consulting
You're probably the best general contractor on Guam or the best hotel manager or best.... Chances are you probably are darn good at what you do for a living and we wish you prosperity with your business. How much do you know about setting up a solar power system, a lot, some, or none? It doesn't matter because we want to help. Give SolCom a call and lets talk, who knows, maybe you'll give use some new idea to help provide for your solar power system needs like several of our already valued customers.
